It's the Little Things That Count (Part 4)

Hello and welcome to the final part of this Advance Wars guide. It's been a long ride but there is only so much that I can present. Let's get started. When playing a strategy game like this, there are a lot of things that need to been considered as I have shown the in the previous posts. Such factors can determine the survival of a unit you may have or completely sway the tide of the match. Knowing some of these situational examples will help you make better strategic decisions in wider application. As always, the following images are sourced by me by screenshotting the game however all credit for the content goes to the Intelligent Systems company.

One on One Unit Engagements

Let' say you have a Tank and want to attack another tank on the map. The opposing Tank is sitting on plains terrain, the tile above that it is a wood/forest terrain tile and the tile in front of it is a road tile. What tile would you want to attack from to minimize the most damage returned to you? A - The road or B - The woods. If you picked option B then you have picked the best option for this isolated scenario. Not only do you save your Tank's HP, you preserve its Attack stat more than if you attacked from the road. You can see that superior terrain usage has significant benefits.

Combined Arms Engagements

Say that you have an Artillery with your Tank in front of it and you encounter an enemy Medium Tank on a plains tile in a match. The Medium Tank is better than the Tank in attack and defense stats however you notice that it is range of your Artillery. How will you engage this target? A - Use Artillery and then your Tank, or B - Use the Tank and then your Artillery. The answer is A because of a few reasons: Attacking at range does not have a consequence of being attacked back and your target is softened. The target being softened (Has less HP than before) reduces its effectiveness enough to give your inferior Tank the edge in the fight. This is one common way to defeat a superior enemy unit however this is a two way street.

Finally one more example before we go. You have a Medium Tank and Artillery that you want to attack the opponent's Tank with. However the tiles around the Tank are covered by the range of a Rocket. What do you do here? A - Use the Medium Tank to attack the Tank, B - Retreat your Medium Tank or C - Use your own Artillery unit to hit their Tank. If you chose C, this is correct; you give yourself free hits on that tank without risking your own. If you chose A then you severely damage the opposing Tank but you put your Medium Tank under Rocket attacks which ruins your unit's HP unnecessarily. As for B, you give up ground that you did not have to since a Medium Tank can easily win a one on one with a Tank attacking.
